Not a muscle locked out straight. A body like a fully inflated, elastic ball: equally tensed everywhere, nowhere open to attack, answering the slightest touch at once.
Yao Chengrong nennt Hun Yuan Li ausdrücklich „Kugelkraft" (heli).
Yao Chengrong explicitly calls Hun Yuan Li “sphere force” (heli). Picture a fully inflated basketball — the air is under high pressure. Three properties make it the analogy.
In the ball there is no “front” or “back”. The air presses up and down, left and right, forward and back — in perfect balance. Only when all three axes are balanced simultaneously does Hun Yuan Li arise. The tension itself is the air (Zheng Li); the spherical shape is its result.
You cannot press in a single point without the whole sphere reacting and pressing back. That is the core: every part of the body coordinated into an organic whole, force from the centre through the entire body — no isolated muscles, no “empty spot” to attack.
A ball is not stiff like a stone — it yields minimally and springs back. Throw it on the ground and it bounces: elastic and explosive, maximum effect from minimum effort. One distinction matters: the sphere is the store of this force. Its deliberate, explosive release is a training stage of its own in Yiquan (Fa Li) — and it does not appear by itself: Zhan Zhuang alone produces no explosive power.
A transmitted mnemonic explains the term through a property you can test yourself: “不觉其力也,故谓之浑元” — the force you do not feel as force is therefore called hunyuan. Anyone who notices effort while performing it is still working with individual muscles, not with the ball. That is an unusually concrete criterion for a term that tips easily into the rhapsodic.
Hun Yuan Li is not merely qi but the interplay of mind, mental image (Yi Nian) and naturalness — the pumping mechanism that builds the pressure in the first place.
The pressure in the ball is not an image for “a lot of force”. It is a force pair that cancels outwardly — and that is exactly why it looks like nothing from outside.
The six-sided counter-tension is an internal force pair: flexors and extensors work gently against one another. It obeys the principle of interaction — every joint force has its counterpart — but both halves sit inside the same body. Outwardly the sum is zero: the centre of mass does not move. What arises is not movement but stiffness and pre-tension — the pressure in the ball.
力从足生 — die Kraft entsteht am Fuß. Der Ball speichert, der Boden schießt.
The stored elasticity is delivered only through an external force pair: the ground reaction. 力从足生 — force arises at the foot. The ball stores; the ground fires.
This separation is the whole trick, and it explains two observations at once: why there is nothing to see in a good stance from outside — and why something nevertheless arrives on contact.
New Chapter of Yiquan" bestätigt.
The five qualities of force come from Wang Xiangzhai’s first book of 1928 (“The right way of Yiquan”, the section on the syncretism of the five elements) and are confirmed in 1939 in “New Chapter of Yiquan”. The reading is what matters: these are not techniques and not blow-for-blow tactics, but descriptions of how the body should feel and behave.
Tap a quality to see it on the sphere.
The five are not menu options to choose between, and not a sequence either. Wang puts it so that every single action carries all five qualities at once — and precisely that simultaneity is Hun Yuan Li. In 1939 he draws the conclusion explicitly: he lists the five elemental forces one by one and ends with “but actually it is just one contradictory force”. The division into five is therefore only a didactic breakdown of a single thing — the all-round contending force, Zheng Li.
That also explains why the demarcation against five-phase cosmology is drawn so sharply: once all five qualities are present simultaneously in every action, a generating-and-overcoming cycle between them no longer makes sense. You cannot play “metal against wood” when both are always there at once anyway.
“Sphere force” is not the only name. Yao Chengrong equates three terms explicitly — and a teacher from an entirely different martial art describes the same thing independently.
What Yiquan calls hunyuanli is “nothing other than” what wushu calls neili (内力, internal force), and corresponds to the heli (合力, sphere force) of taijiquan. “Many words for the same thing.” The core is the same everywhere: joining up and down, left and right, front and back into one body. What is striking is how he defines neili — as the interplay of spirit, imagination and naturalness, not as mere qi.
In an interview conducted by Andreas Graf in Germany in the 1990s and reproduced by Mike Sigman, the Chen taiji teacher Chen Jumin independently describes hunyuan strength as a six-directions force — pushing and pulling at once, opening and closing, rising and sinking — and adds: “It’s the whole body!” A mere technique, he says, it expressly is not. That the same description turns up in a different martial art suggests a mechanism is being named here, not a school formula.
From the Yao Zongxun line comes Zheng Ti Li (整体力). Both mean the fully integrated whole-body force but stress different things: Zheng Ti Li the structural unity — no breaks, no empty places — and Hun Yuan Li the availability in every direction.
The pressure does not arise by itself. Three of Yiquan’s tools build it and hold it — at rest, in movement and at the moment of discharge.
Inflating the ball while standing, until the pressure is equal everywhere. The basis: tension in all three axes without movement.
Learning to hold the pressure in movement too — the ball must not dent as it rolls. “A tyre full of high-pressure gas that answers every touch.”
The mental image (Yi) is the pump that builds the pressure; letting go is the valve that releases the force at the right moment.
The body as a fully filled, elastic sphere — equally tensed everywhere, nowhere open to attack, answering the slightest touch at once.
