Fascia
A preliminary that belongs to the subject
Fascia are sheet-like connective tissue structures: the sheaths of the muscles and, in the broad reading, all collagenous fibre structures — capsules, aponeuroses, ligaments, tendons.
An important caveat first: no primary Yiquan text speaks of fascia. The term appears where modern explanatory models approach the classical practice. It is background, not doctrine — and for that very reason must be kept carefully apart from what the sources actually say (Entmystifizierung cuts both ways: modern explanations must not become tradition retroactively either).
Three properties that touch the training
- A sense organ. Deep fascia carry numerous proprioceptors, along with mechano-, chemo- and thermoreceptors. This is the tissue substrate of what Mo Jin gropes for and of what is sharpened as “listening to force” (Ting Jin).
- Force transmission. Fascia transmit force — the iliotibial tract, for instance, acts as a tension band for the femur. Force therefore does not travel exclusively along the muscle–tendon–bone chain (Actio und Reactio).
- Adjustable stiffness. Myofibroblasts make deep fascia actively contractile, and stiffness correlates with tissue density. Stiffness is thus an adjustable quantity, not a constant — which gives the 松紧 alternation a material counterpart.
Add viscoelasticity: superficial fascia are extensible and store water, deep fascia are richer in collagen and bear tensile load. This is the tissue counterpart of what Yiquan describes as elastic preload (Zheng Li, Hun Yuan Li).
Where the term appears in the wiki
In the description of the creeping micro-movement of Mo Jin; in the image of the body as a fully inflated balloon with a fascial “skin”, the rest following through lines of tension; and in the explanation of the outer three harmonies through longitudinal connections — elbow to knee, shoulder to hip, wrist to ankle.
Each of these images is a modern reading of a classical observation. They serve as aids to understanding; they prove nothing.
