The Two Kinetics — the engine at a standstill

A car in gear drives: the movement is the work. An engine revving in neutral turns fast, yet the car stands still — enormous output, no locomotion. That is exactly Zhan Zhuang: outwardly still, inwardly under full load.

Put it in gear — or rev the engine at a standstill.
Neutral — the engine idles quietly
01 Yu Yong Nian’s model

Two classes of movement

Yu Yong Nian divides all bodily activity into two “kinetics”. Every sport knows the first. The second is Dachengquan’s real contribution — and the reason why standing motionless can be intensive training.

First kinetic

Moving · “animal”
  • Working muscles carry out flexion and extension.
  • Conventional sport, martial arts, everyday life — the movement is visible.
  • Little mental involvement: the control runs automatically.
  • The car in gear: outside = inside, the movement is the work.

Second kinetic

Non-moving · “vegetal”
  • Resting muscles in cycles of contraction and relaxation — without outward movement.
  • Reachable only by conscious command of the mind: the brain commands nerves and tendons directly.
  • High mental involvement — fully conscious.
  • The engine at a standstill: outwardly still, inwardly under full load.
02 Passive & proactive exercise

Why standing still is work

That work is genuinely being done in quiet standing is measurable. After ten to twenty minutes the body reports unmistakably that the engine is running — only the clutch is down.

90–150

Pulse (bpm)

The heart rate rises as if under load — although the body stands outwardly motionless.

+4–5 °C

Temperature around the knee

The thigh muscles contract and relax at high frequency; the warmth rises measurably in that area.

Schweiß

Warming of the whole body

Warming, sweating and a feeling of well-being — the signature of genuine inner work.

Passive PE — still the first kinetic

Holding the posture

Merely standing already forces the working muscles into constant contraction to carry the position. That is the base load — still the first kinetic.

Proactive PE — the second kinetic

Addressing the resting muscles

In addition the practitioner consciously addresses the resting muscles. The pulse rises further; it takes full conscious control. This is exactly where Dachengquan’s own contribution to training physiology begins.

03 Changing up

Five stages — the revs rise

The second kinetic is “revved up” in stages: from stage to stage a more demanding tissue becomes the target — first muscles, then nerves, then tendons, and finally the mind itself. Tap a stage.

04 Within the system

What you drive this engine with

The second kinetic does not run by itself. Four of Yiquan’s tools build it and keep it going.

Training system

Zhan Zhuang

The primary training system of the second kinetic — standing motionless and revving the engine at a standstill.

Terminology

Song Jin

Song (releasing) and Jin (tensing): the language for the contraction and relaxation cycles of the resting muscles.

Control

Yi

The imagination is the accelerator: seven types of mental activity address the resting muscles.

Precondition

Relaxation

Without releasing the working muscles the resting muscles stay out of reach — relaxation is the ignition.

Conventional training trains the working muscles. Zhan Zhuang trains the resting muscles by command of the mind — the engine at a standstill.
