The moment two arms touch, you “hear” the opponent’s force: where it comes from, how strong it is, where his centre stands. It is not the ear that listens — the sense of touch and the deep sensibility of the body do. And only a relaxed body hears anything at all.
Ting Jin is the tactile ability to read the opponent’s force through the point of contact — direction, centre of gravity, fullness and emptiness, intent. On contact one feels at once where and how hard the push goes, and can respond fluidly before seeing it.
“Listening force: sensing the direction of the opponent’s force through contact — out of relaxation and attention.”
— Zhao Daoxin, Abhandlung zur Faustkunst— Zhao Daoxin, Theory of the Art of the FistAnders als im Taijiquan, wo das „Kraft-Hören" vor allem im Push-Hands gedrillt wird, wurzelt es im Yiquan im Stand: Das nervale Mikrobewegungs-Training des Mo Jin schärft den Tastsinn, der dann in den Partnerkontakt getragen wird.
Unlike in taijiquan, where “listening to force” is drilled mainly in push-hands, in Yiquan it is rooted in the stance: the neural micro-movement training of Mo Jin sharpens the sense of touch, which is then carried into contact with a partner.
Feeling for the force: creeping micro-movement sharpens deep sensibility — one feels for one’s own proprioception.
Derselbe geschärfte Tastsinn liest jetzt die Kraft eines Gegners: Richtung, Mitte, Fülle/Leere.
The same sharpened sense of touch now reads an opponent’s force: direction, centre, fullness and emptiness.
The training ground: going with the force one has heard, acting against the current, taking the centre.

Behind the image of “listening” stands physiology: three tissues report different quantities to the nervous system. For listening to force it is above all the third that counts — the force actually acting.
Deep fasciae are densely set with receptors and report stretch, pressure and vibration.
The intrafusal fibres measure length and its change — the input command of the movement.
At the junction of muscle and tendon, in series with the fibre: it measures tension — exactly the force one wants to “hear”.
The muscle spindle reports the command and the change in length, the Golgi tendon organ the force put out. Whoever “hears force” on contact is probably reading above all this second quantity. Read this way, Ting Jin gives a sober account of what was traditionally described as “sensing qi” — a plausible reading, not a measured fact.
Zhao Daoxin puts the use of the opponent’s force into an order: one listens first — then one chooses the answer. Tap an answer.
Kraft gegen Kraft stemmen. Bracing force against force. It works only if one is stronger — in Yiquan the weakest answer, and mostly to be avoided.
Ting Jin is no additional effort but the opposite: only a body that is not tense takes in the fine information about the opponent’s force at all.
One’s own muscle tension drowns every signal — one pushes back instead of reading, and always reacts a beat too late. One “hears” one’s own effort, not the opponent.
Song: soft outside, awake inside. The contact surface becomes permeable to information; the smallest changes of direction and centre are felt at once — the answer comes before the opponent shows it.
Ting Jin is the hinge between solo perception and application in combat — without it the combat principles stay blind.
Only once one has heard the direction can one flow with it and at the same time act against the current.
Keeping one’s own centre, taking the opponent’s — both presuppose that one feels both centres.
Die Reifeform: aus dem Hören wird Verstehen. Man neutralisiert nicht mehr reagierend, sondern vorausschauend.
The mature form: listening turns into understanding. One no longer neutralises in reaction but in anticipation.
